Salik for company cars and rental fleets: accounts, tags and tolls by rental
Updated 10 October 2026 · doIT is not affiliated with Salik or RTA
Salik is Dubai's road toll system. It bills the vehicle's owner: for a company car that is the company, for a rental car the rental company, which recovers the toll from the renter under the contract. This guide is for those who run a fleet: the account and tags, the price by the hour, violations, and how each toll reaches the right renter.
We wrote it from practice: we built the system for ALVI, a car rental company in Dubai, and in it Salik tolls land on the right rental by themselves.

A car drives under a Salik gate. Let's follow this toll, from the gate to the customer's invoice.
The gate does not stop the car. A sensor reads the tag, cameras read the plate. It is Monday, 17:40. Peak hours: AED 6, plus 5% VAT on top.
The toll comes out of the company's Salik account. The account is prepaid. It can hold any number of cars, and each car has its own tag. Salik bills the owner of the car, whoever is driving. For a rental car, that is the rental company.
In the company's statement, the toll is one line: the plate, the gate, the time, the amount. There is no customer in it. With many cars and many rentals, this is where a toll gets lost.
In the system we built for ALVI, a car rental company in Dubai, the rule is simple. A toll belongs to a rental if it happens between the key handover and the actual return. Go by the time, not the date. A toll at 00:20 stays in the rental that began the day before. A toll 7 minutes before the keys went out is outside any rental. It is not assigned to any customer.
Now one car, one day, two renters. The car comes back in the morning and goes out again in the afternoon. A toll in between is outside any rental. The evening toll goes to the new renter.
When the car is returned, the tolls for that rental go into the final invoice as separate lines. And the customer sees the charges for their own rental in their portal.
Charges land on the right rental by themselves. Want a similar system? Leave a request at do-it.agency. The full guide is in the QR code on screen.
Salik for a company car: who gets the bill
A car passes a Salik gate without stopping: RFID reads its tag, cameras read its plate, and the toll comes off a prepaid account. A car without an active tag is still recorded by its plate.
Under Salik’s 2025 FAQ, the owner of the vehicle pays tolls and violations, whoever was driving, and Dubai Law No. 22 of 2006 puts the toll on vehicle owners. For a company car that is the company, for a rental car the rental company.
Rules marked “Salik’s 2025 FAQ” or “terms” come from its FAQ and terms as archived on 14 September 2025: salik.ae did not open for us on 10 October 2026. Check the current wording at salik.ae.
Salik has ten gates as of October 2026: its Annual Report 2025 lists ten, and its results for the first half of 2026 name no new ones. The last two opened on 24 November 2024.

Salik rates and timings in Dubai, 2026
The price of a trip depends on the day and the hour:
- Monday to Saturday, peak hours: AED 6 from 6:00 to 10:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00
- Monday to Saturday, the rest of the paid day: AED 4 from 10:00 to 16:00 and from 20:00 to 1:00
- Sunday: AED 4 at any paid hour
The amounts are set by Dubai Executive Council Resolution No. 1 of 2025, in force since 31 January 2025. The hours are from Salik’s disclosure on the Dubai Financial Market of 29 November 2024. RTA sets them and can change them with the Executive Council’s approval.
Since 1 June 2026, 5% VAT goes on top of the toll, according to u.ae. The base tariff stayed the same; with VAT it is AED 6.30 and AED 4.20. We checked the rates, the hours and the VAT on 10 October 2026.

Standard timetable. On public holidays and event days announced by RTA, Mon–Sat rates apply, Sundays included. In Ramadan 2025 and 2026 the hours were different: check Salik's announcements

When Salik is free
Salik is free every day from 1:00 to 6:00.
- Public holidays are not free: on the holidays, official occasions and event days that RTA announces, the weekday rates apply, even on a Sunday
- Ramadan had its own timetable: in 2025 and 2026, AED 6 from 9:00 to 17:00, AED 4 from 7:00 to 9:00 and from 17:00 to 2:00, free from 2:00 to 7:00, AED 4 on Sundays
The Ramadan timetable is from Salik’s archived rate table of 2025; for 2026, Gulf News and Emirates 24|7 gave the same. We found no official Salik release for 2026 or 2027: check Salik’s announcement before Ramadan.
Two gates, one charge. A vehicle that passes Al Safa North and Al Safa South in the same direction within one hour pays once, according to Salik’s Annual Report 2025. Under Salik’s 2025 FAQ, the same rule covered Al Mamzar North and Al Mamzar South, and the fee was set by the time of the first trip.
Salik account for a company
A company can hold a Salik account in its own name: this is what people look for as a Salik corporate or business account. RTA Administrative Resolution No. 361 of 2019 sets the rules for accounts and tags. It defines a user as “a natural or legal person who owns a Motor Vehicle registered in the Salik System”.
| Question | What the rules say |
|---|---|
| How many vehicles one account takes | Any number, under the master account or a sub-account |
| Tags | Each vehicle gets its own tag, and the tag may not be used on any other vehicle |
| Part of the fleet kept apart | A sub-account at the user’s request, for some vehicles and their payments. Ask Salik how to set one up today |
| Vehicles registered in other emirates | They pay the toll too: the toll law charges it “whether or not the Vehicle is registered in the Emirate” |
Under Salik’s 2025 FAQ and terms:
- the account is tied to the company’s Traffic File
- it takes only vehicles that the account holder owns
- buying a tag online was for individuals: fleet and corporate customers were told to call 800 SALIK (72545)
We found no official list of documents for a company account: ask about it, and about sub-accounts, on that call.
Salik company account login
On salik.ae or in the Smart Salik app, with the account owner’s login. According to RTA’s page for the app, it shows the balance, the vehicles on the account, recent trips and fines, lets you view and download statements and can recharge any account. Under Salik’s 2025 FAQ, unpaid trips showed a countdown to the moment they turn into violations.
What we could not confirm: a separate login or portal for companies, how soon a trip appears on the account, and auto top-up for a company account. We do not describe the screens inside: we could not check them against the current site.
Setting up the rental company itself is a separate guide: how to start a car rental business in Dubai.
Salik tag for a company vehicle
Where you buy a tag decides when it starts working, according to Emirates 24|7’s Salik guide of 8 September 2026:
| Where the tag comes from | When it starts working |
|---|---|
| Salik’s website or the Smart Salik app | By itself, once an SMS confirms the payment |
| A petrol station, for example Emarat, ENOC or ADNOC | Once you activate it before the first trip: on Salik’s website or app, in the RTA Dubai app or by calling 800 SALIK |
What a tag costs. Resolution No. 1 of 2025 sets AED 50 for a tag and the same for replacing a lost or damaged one: AED 52.50 with VAT since 1 June 2026. An authorised sales agent charges AED 102.50, of which AED 50 goes onto the balance, according to the same guide.
A new car on the road before its tag is active. The grace period and the fines are in the violations table. Under Salik’s 2025 terms, once the tag is active, Salik deducts the tolls of the grace period from the balance.
A car you sold. Resolution No. 361 of 2019 requires the owner to apply to cancel the tag and remove it from the car. Take the car off the account too: under Salik’s 2025 FAQ, otherwise the new owner’s tolls came off your account.
A lost or stolen tag. Under Salik’s 2025 terms, deactivate it at once: until Salik is notified, it keeps deducting that tag’s tolls from your account.
Salik recharge for a company account
A recharge starts at AED 50 and goes up in multiples of AED 50, under Resolution No. 361 of 2019. Under Salik’s 2025 FAQ, one transaction could not exceed AED 50,000, a bank or an app could set a lower limit, and auto top-up went through banks and depended on the bank.
Top up for the spend you expect. Under Salik’s 2025 terms:
- a balance was not refunded
- it could move to another account only in listed cases, among them two branches of one company with the same owners and two companies with the same partners and owners
- an account with no tolls, payments or recharges for 5 years became inactive and lost its balance
With a short balance the trip is still recorded; the grace period and the fine are in the violations table. Under Salik’s 2025 FAQ, a low-balance SMS may not arrive, and a missed SMS does not cancel the violation.
Salik violations and fines: what a fleet can be charged
The amounts AED 50, AED 100 and AED 10,000 are in Dubai Executive Council Resolution No. 19 of 2010. The grace periods and the steps to AED 200 and AED 400 are from Salik’s 2025 FAQ and terms, repeated by Emirates 24|7 in September 2026.
| Violation | Grace period | Fine |
|---|---|---|
| A trip with not enough balance | 5 working days to recharge | AED 50 |
| A trip without an active tag | 10 working days to buy and activate one | AED 100 for the first trip, AED 200 for the second, AED 400 for each one after |
| Tampering with a tag, using it fraudulently, or damaging a toll gate or a payment machine | Not stated | AED 10,000 |
Saturday counts on the tariff, not in the grace period. Under Salik’s 2025 terms, the days to recharge do not include Saturdays, Sundays or declared public holidays. Do not leave the recharge to the last day.
Disputes. Resolution No. 361 of 2019 gives 13 months from the date of the fine, or until the vehicle’s registration is renewed, whichever comes first. Check a car’s violations in the Smart Salik app before renewing its registration.
Also under Salik’s 2025 FAQ and terms:
- for the first two violations in the table, at most one a day per vehicle counted
- gate fines were capped at AED 10,000 per vehicle a calendar year; parking was outside the cap
- a paid violation could still be disputed, and Salik refunded a wrong one
- violations on a Dubai-registered vehicle also showed on the Dubai Police website
Salik on a rental car in Dubai
Salik bills the toll to the account holder, that is the rental company, and the company recovers it from the renter under the rental contract. Salik’s 2025 rules do not mention rental cars separately.
RTA’s release of 24 March 2026 says the unified rental contract prohibits “the imposition of any undisclosed fees, such as additional charges related to passing toll gates”. Our guide to TARS covers the unified contract.
How to check Salik for a rental car
The tolls are on the rental company’s Salik account, so you will most likely not find them in your own. Ask the company for the list of tolls for your rental and go through it line by line.
| In the list | Check it against |
|---|---|
| Date and time of each toll | When you took the keys and when you returned the car |
| A toll between 1:00 and 6:00 | A reason to ask the company: outside Ramadan, no toll is charged in those hours |
| Plate | The car you rented |
| Al Safa North and Al Safa South in the same direction within one hour | One charge, not two |
| Amount | The rate on the clock above, plus 5% VAT since 1 June 2026. Holidays, event days and Ramadan: see “When Salik is free” |
| Parking paid from the Salik account | Whether you were at that site at that time |
How to pay Salik for a rental car
The company has already paid the gate from its own account, and you pay its bill. Look at two documents:
- The contract: how Salik is charged and whether anything comes on top of the toll
- The final invoice: your rental’s tolls, ideally one line each with the date and time, to check against the table above
Passing each toll to the right rental
In the toll data the system we built for ALVI receives, a line carries the date and time, the plate, the tag, the amount, the gate and the direction. The customer is not in it: only your rental schedule knows who had the car at that minute. By hand, you put the Salik statement from the Smart Salik app next to your schedule of handovers and returns.

The rule the system we built for ALVI follows: a toll belongs to a rental if its time falls between key handover and the actual return. Charges land on the right rental by themselves
Illustration, not a Salik screen. Plates, times and gates are made up and picked from edge cases, this is not statistics. Amounts follow the tariff with 5% VAT
Source: Dubai Executive Council Resolution No. 1 of 2025, Salik's disclosure on DFM of 29 November 2024, u.ae for VAT. Checked 10 October 2026
A toll belongs to the rental whose window contains its time: from the actual key handover to the actual return, as your staff recorded them at the car, not the booking times. An open rental’s window runs to the present moment. Drafts and cancelled bookings have no window.
The changeover day. The car comes back in the morning and goes out again in the evening. The evening toll goes to the new renter: the date alone is not enough.
A toll outside every rental belongs to no customer. Between rentals somebody drives the car to the car wash, the workshop or the next customer, and those trips can pass gates too.
Before you close the final invoice. If the car’s tolls for the rental are not all in yet, the list is not final. We found no figure for how soon a trip appears on the account.
Read the direction as a side of the gate. In Salik’s data it is the side the car passed the gate toward. A trip through Al Safa on Sheikh Zayed Road is labelled “Abu Dhabi”, and printed as is it tells the customer they drove to Abu Dhabi. The system we built for ALVI prints “toward Abu Dhabi” with a note.
The routine fits on one page in the PDF checklist
Parking charged to the Salik account
The Salik account pays for parking too. Salik’s Annual Report 2025, its H1 2026 results and Dubai Media Office releases on Parkonic and Valtrans name these sites:
| Parking | On the Salik account |
|---|---|
| Dubai Mall | Since 1 July 2024 |
| Parkonic sites | Contract announced on 28 November 2024 |
| Dubai airport (DXB): Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and the cargo terminal | Since 22 January 2026 |
| Harbour West Car Park at Dubai Harbour | From 13 July 2026 (start of implementation) |
| Valtrans valet parking, more than 100 locations | Launch announced for 1 June 2026 |
According to Parkonic’s FAQ, Salik works only at selected Parkonic sites, a charge may not appear at once, and if the Salik balance is short, Parkonic’s own terms apply. At some sites the Salik account is the default: the rules of one on-street site say the fee comes off the vehicle’s Salik account on exit unless the driver selects another method.
In the data the system we built for ALVI receives, a parking line carries the entry and exit times, the operator, the site and the amount: parking can be matched to rentals the same way as tolls.
Where a rental fleet loses money on Salik
| What goes wrong | What happens |
|---|---|
| Tolls are matched by date | A toll at 19:20 lands on the renter who returned the car at 9:00, not on the one who took it at 18:00 |
| A toll outside every rental is billed to a customer | A dispute: the customer did not have the car then |
| The Salik balance runs out | After the grace period, AED 50, up to one violation a day for each vehicle |
| A new car goes on the road before its tag is active | After the grace period, AED 100, AED 200, then AED 400 a trip |
| Parking paid from the Salik account is never billed | The company pays for the customer’s parking |
How the system we built for ALVI handles Salik
- Charges land on the right rental by themselves: Salik tolls and Parkonic parking arrive on a schedule in one log, and each goes to the rental whose window holds its time
- A toll outside every rental is marked and is not charged to a customer.
- One feed for the manager: Salik, parking, fines and DARB across the fleet, each line with the renter and the order number
- At return the rental’s tolls and parking go into the final invoice and the return form as separate lines. If a car’s data did not arrive, the system says so instead of showing an empty list
- The Salik balance: the system takes the average spend over 7 days, shows how many days the money will last and warns when it runs low
